Waunakee eyes first baseball state championship this week

"We're playing our best baseball at the right time of the season."

That's according to Waunakee coach Spencer Lee, who recapped last week's dominating sectional double-header sweep of Holmen and DeForest, winning by a combined 25-3 in two five-inning contests.

Lee also discusses Waunakee's first opponent, Eau Claire North; what it's like to coach his son, Derek; and the benefit of multi-sport athletes on the roster.

You can hear the full interview below. Here's the WIAA's preview of each team in the opening quarterfinal of the day:

Waunakee advances to the State tournament for the second year in a row and for the 10th time overall. The Warriors’ furthest advance in the tournament has been to the semifinals on a number of occasions and most recently in 2010. They finished tied for first place with Beaver Dam in the North Division of the Badger Conference this season, and they trounced DeForest 12-1 in five innings in the sectional final played at Middleton.

Eau Claire North is making its third consecutive appearance in the State Tournament and its 13th experience overall. The Huskies won the State title in 2011 and  have finished runner-up three times, in 1981, 2002 and 2005. They defeated Stevens Point 5-2 to win the final of the Eau Claire Sectional to earn another berth in the tournament field. The Huskies are the champions in the Big Rivers Conference this season.
