WIAA State Girls Tennis Individual Tournament Preview

THE MEET: The 48th Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Girls Individual Tennis Tournament will be held Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 11-13. The meet takes place at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison, Wis. Action will begin Thursday at 10:30 a.m., Friday at 9 a.m. and Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Tickets are $6 for adults and students.

11:30 a.m. - Championship Matches

LAST YEAR: Third-seeded Kiki Risgaard of Neenah won the Division 1 singles championship by defeating top-seeded Andie Weise of Homestead 7-5, 6-0 in the title match. The fifth-seeded doubles tandem of Amanda Newman and Hailey Munz of Monona Grove claimed the Division 1 doubles championship with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 decision over second-seeded Frankie La londe and Alyssa Boyer of Homestead in the championship match. Second-seeded Veda Sane of University School won the singles title in Division 2 by downing top-seeded Olivia Czerwonka of Kenosha St. Joseph 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 in the title match. In Division 2 doubles play, the top-seeded tandem of Kaitlyn Kalinka and Megan Setter of Kenosha St. Joseph beat sixth-seeded Grace Drake and Kinsey Kessel of Edgewood 6-1, 6-1 in the final.

DIVISION 1 SINGLES NOTES: A freshman was bestowed the top seed in the bracket. Bojana Pozder of Racine Case is undefeated this season with a 34-0 record. She is the first freshman to be issued the #1 seed since Aly Coran of Homestead earned it in 2008. She went on to win the crown that season. Senior Logan White of Divine Savior Holy Angels is seeded second with a 26-2 mark. She placed fifth as the fifth seed last year and was also fifth in 2016 as the #4 seed. She qualified as a freshman in 2015 and advanced to the third round before falling from title contention. Her teammate, junior Jordan Schifano, gives DSHA two of the top three seeded qualifiers. She is undefeated this season and seeded third with a 27-0 record heading into the State tournament. Schifano placed third last year, and she qualified in 2016 and won her first match before dropping her second-round match to White. Junior Grace Olson of Madison Memorial is a three-time State qualifier. She won her opening-round match before dropping her second-round match-up last season, and she fell in the opening round her freshman season in 2016. She has compiled a 24-2 record and is the fourth seed this season. Junior Natalie Yang of Homestead has also qualified for the third time. Like Olson, she won a match last season and fell in the opening round in 2016. Yang, the #5 seed, enters play this week with a 28-5 record. Senior Anna Beyer of Neenah has qualified for the third straight season. She is the #6 seed with a 26-1 mark. She failed to advance out of the first round last season as the #16 seed after winning her first-round match in 2016. Senior Emily Horneffer of Brookfield East is the seventh seed with an 18-6 record. She is a four-time State qualifier, advancing to the third round last year and the second round in both 2015 and 2106. Senior Sabrina Tang of Stevens Point is also a four-time qualifier. She is seeded eighth with a 25-1 record. She advanced to the quarterfinals last season, to the third round in 2016 and to the second round in 2015. Sophomore Maddi Bremel of Madison West is seeded #9 with a 28-7 mark after qualifying last season and falling in her opening-round match. Junior Lauren Landstrom of New Berlin Eisenhower is the 10th seed with a 15-5 record. She has qualified the past two seasons, having advanced to the second round in 2016 and dropping her opening-round match last season. Sophomore Autumn Bruno of Whitnall is the 11th seed after receiving the fourth seed in the bracket last season. She has compiled a 20-2 record this year following a fourth-place finish at State a year ago.

DIVISION 1 DOUBLES NOTES: Senior Maddie Clark and sophomore Karsen Dettman of Middleton have been awarded the top seed with a 22-1 record. Clark is a four-time State qualifier in the doubles bracket with different partners each year. She advanced to the third round last season and to the second round in 2015 and 2016. Seniors Annabelle Crowley and Emma Koppa of Nicolet are seeded second with a 24-3 record. The tandem was seeded third last year and finished fifth. Crowley was the State runner-up in both 2015 and 2016 with a different partner, and Koppa switched partners last season after advancing to the quarterfinals in 2016 and to the second round in 2015. Senior Claudia Huerth and junior Ava Anderson of Badger are the #3 seed with a 19-1 record. Huerth qualified last season with a different partner and advanced to the second round. Seniors Gabby Majinski and Julia Hintz of New Berlin Eisenhower are seeded fourth with a 23-1 mark this season. Majinski has qualified for the third time with different partners. She finished fourth last year after advancing to the second round in 2016. Hintz qualified with a different partner last year and advanced to the second round. Seniors Megan Phillips and Ashley LaBelle of Mukwonago are 30-6 this season and have received the #5 seed. Phillips has qualified the past two seasons with different partners. She advanced to the third round in 2016 and fell in the first round last year. LaBelle qualified last season in singles play and lost in her opening-round match. The #6 seed is senior Taylor Meeth and junior Rachel Vande Moore of Kettle Moraine with a 25-5 record. Meeth qualified last season with a different partner. The duo lost in the opening round. The tandem of senior Erin Brezovar and junior Maddie Toboyek of Muskego is the #7 seed with a 22-4 record. Both Brezovar and Toboyek advanced to the second round with different partners last season. The eighth seed is senior Sommer Schoenenberger and junior Ashwini Murthy of Sheboygan North, who have compiled a 27-4 record this season. Schoenenberger gained experience by qualifying last season and fell in the opening round with a different partner. Junior Bridget Brown and sophomore Kate Wade of Homestead are the ninth seed with a record of 21-7. Both have previous State experience with different partners. Brown advanced to the third round a season ago and in 2016. Wade also reached the third round last year in her freshman campaign. Their teammates, senior Grace Crowley and junior Sasha Shapsis, comprise the 10th-seeded team with an undefeated 32-0 record. Shapsis was Brown’s partner last season when the duo advanced to the third round as the #14 seed, and she was was issued the top seed in 2016 and finished third with a different partner. Crowley was Wade’s partner a year ago when they advanced to the third round. Seniors Lindsey Johnson and Lexi Hastings of Menomonie are undefeated at 33-0, which lands them the #11 seed. The tandem has qualified the last two years, losing in the first round in 2016 and advancing to the second round last year.

DIVISION 2 SINGLES NOTES: Defending champion Veda Sane, a senior at University School, has been issued the third seed with a 20-2 record. She did not qualify in 2016 after finishing third in 2015. Senior Olivia Czerwonka of Kenosha St. Joseph is the top seed for the second straight season. She enters play with an unblemished 18-0 mark. She finished runner-up to Vane last year, fifth in 2016 and sixth in 2015. Sophomore Mia Larrain of Newman Catholic is the #2 seed. She has compiled a 28-1 record this season after qualifying last season as a freshman and falling in her opening-round match. Sophomore Lauren Carson of Catholic Memorial is the fourth seed with a 24-3 record this fall. She qualified as a freshman last season and won her first-round match before being eliminated from title contention by Vane in the second round. Sophomore Baluck Deang of Edgewood was issued the fifth seed with an 18-5 record. She won two matches at State as the fifth seed last season before she, too, was ousted by Vane. Senior Marie Major of Brookfield Academy is seeded sixth. She is a three-time qualfier, winning one match in 2016 and a pair of matches last year. Junior Margaret Bugnacki of Shorewood is 13-8 this season, and she has been issued the seventh seed in her first time qualifying for the tournament. Sophomore Erika Curtin of Xavier is the eighth seed with a 22-5 record. She qualified in doubles play last season and advanced to the quarterfinals.

DIVISION 2 DOUBLES NOTES:  The tandem of seniors Giana Apostoli and Megan Setter of Kenosha St. Joseph was awarded the top seed with an 18-0 record. Setter is half the duo that won the championship last season after placing runner-up in 2016. Apostoli has qualified twice in singles play. She placed fourth in singles play last season after winning an opening-round match in 2016. Seniors Mackenzie Lindow and Erin Rice of East Troy are seeded #2. They finished sixth a year ago as the third seed after placing fourth in 2016. They enter the tournament with a 30-1 record this season. Senior Hailey Stoltenberg and junior Sarah Gesner of The Prairie School are the third seed with a 19-6 mark. Gesner qualified last year with a different partner and won a first-round match. Kohler’s duo of Senior Elly Udovich and sophomore Ava Hoffmann are seeded fourth with a 26-2 record. They qualified last year and placed fifth. Senior Grace Watkins and junior Grace Gridley of University School comprise the #5-seeded doubles tandem. They have compiled a 17-11 record this season after qualifying last season. Senior Lily Anne Van Ye and junior Ellie Macksood of Xavier are the sixth seed with a 18-2 record. Van Ye qualified and advanced to the quarterfinals last season with a different partner. The Catholic Memorial duo of senior Margaret Diedrich and junior Rylee Teuteberg is the seventh seed with a 14-13 mark. Diedrich qualified with a different partner last season and was upended in the first round after qualifying with the same partner in 2016 and advancing to the third round. Senior Kinsey Kessel and junior Lizzie Drake of Edgewood are seeded eighth. They have a 15-10 record entering play this week. Kessel finished runner-up with a different partner last season.
