Michael Zande's hat trick leads Monona Grove past Monroe 5-2

A hat trick by Michael Zande proved to be the scoring difference as Monona Grove used a four-goal second period to take down Badger South foe Monroe on the road on Tuesday night to move into third place in the conference.

The Silver Eagles got the scoring going mid-way through the first period, 7:14 into the game, when Connor Handel put away a pass from Ethan Johnson to make it 1-0 Monona Grove. Monroe answered five minutes later on a power-play goal by Jared Cline, who hammered away glove-side to tie the game at a goal apiece after one period.

While the first period was fairly even, the second period was all Monona Grove. Michael Zande got the first of his three goals in the period unassisted at 6:27 in to the frame. Two minutes later, Tanner Smith lit the lamp with a power-play goal unassisted to extend the Monona Grove lead to 3-1. Zande's second goal of the second period came at the 11:57 mark, burying a rebound try in front of goal to move the Silver Eagles ahead 4-1.

Monona Grove would get one more power play goal with just 15 seconds left in the second period, as Zande took a Dawson Dutcher pass from the blue line to poke home a redirect try to put the Silver Eagles ahead 5-1 going into the second intermission.

Monroe would battle back with a power play goal in the final period, when Travis Edmunds blasted a shot top shelf right to bring the Cheesemakers within three goals, but each team held serve through the conclusion of the game. Monroe in their current configuration has never defeated Monona Grove, and that streak continued on Tuesday night.

"It didn't feel like a 5-2 game," said Monroe coach Barry Einbeck after the game. "I thought we did some good things."

"That second period was a big one for us," said Monona Grove coach Dave Kinsler following his team's win. "Hopefully, we can carry that over to our next game."

Goaltender Heath Bear stopped 39 of 44 shots on goal for Monroe, while Jason Borchert ended up with 24 saves for Monona Grove.

The teams will play again on Tuesday, January 22nd.
