Brewers Win Pitchers' Duel As Burnes, Crew Edge Out Marlins 2-1

The reigning NL Cy Young winner would love a little more run support from his offense. He's not asking for much and really doesn't need much. He got just enough in support for the Brewers to beat the Marlins 2-1 on Friday night.

Things seemed to be looking up for the offense early as Kolten Wong slugged a leadoff home run on the second pitch of the game to give Milwaukee a 1-0 lead. They weren't able to add on as Marlins ace Pablo Lopez settled into the game after that and kept the Brewers at one run.

Corbin Burnes meanwhile was cruising through most of the game, having his usual strong performance, except when he allowed a solo home run to old friend and Marlins 1B Jesus Aguilar in the 3rd inning to tie the game at 1.

It would stay a 1-1 game for a while after that as both Burnes and Lopez cruised through seven strong innings. Lopez went 7 IP with three hits allowed, one run, no walks, and 11 strikeouts. Burnes went 7 IP, scattering five hits and one run with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Steven Okert pitched a scoreless 8th for Miami and Devin Williams locked down the 8th for Milwaukee.

In the 9th inning, still in a tie game, Christian Yelich started the Brewers off with a single, then Luis Urias was hit by a pitch. Tyrone Taylor hit a bullet to right field but Yelich had to hold up, fearing the ball might be caught, and could only make it to third base. With the bases loaded and nobody out, the Marlins brought in their closer, Anthony Bender.

Bender faced Hunter Renfroe and struck him out on three pitches. Then Jace Peterson stepped in and Bender couldn't find the zone as Peterson drew a four-pitch, bases loaded walk to bring in a run and make it a 2-1 Brewers lead. The Crew couldn't add on but the one run lead was enough for Josh Hader.

Hader got the three outs he needed on just seven pitches, locking down his 13th save in as many appearances this season.

Devin Williams got the win and Tanner Scott took the loss for Miami.

For Saturday's game, it'll be Eric Lauer (3-0, 1.82 ERA) on the mound for the Crew and Trevor Rogers (1-4, 5.00 ERA) pitching for the Marlins.
