Marquette manhandled in Manhattan

The Marquette Golden Eagles came into Madison Square Garden on a high, having won four out of their last five games, vanquishing their two previous end-of-season collapses from 2019 and 2020.

That high didn’t last long, as the Golden Eagles got manhandled by Georgetown in the opening round of the Big East Tournament, 68-49, effectively ending their season with a resounding thud at 13-14.

"They outplayed us in every facet of the game," Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski said of Georgetown after the game.

When MU needed to be at their best, they were literally at their worst. The Golden Eagles began the game ice cold from the floor, making just 3 of 16 shots (including missing all seven three-point attempts), and did not score at all for the final six minutes of the first half.

If there had been fans in the stands, it would have bee east to see them find other things to do at halftime, as the game was effectively over at 32-14; Marquette’s lowest first half point total in seven years.

What the future holds for the Marquette program is uncertain. It is not a far stretch to find antsy boosters who have still not seen a NCAA Tournament win in the seven seasons Steve Wojciechowski has been at the helm of the program.

Barring a slew of teams opting out of the upcoming tournament ahead of Selection Sunday, that dubious streak figures to continue.
