Girls Hoops: Regional champs crowned; Sectionals begin Thursday

Most regional finals were completed on Friday, with winners moving on to next Thursday's sectional round. Severe weather to the west and north forced some postponements to Monday night across Wisconsin.

You can see all of the brackets and results by clicking here.

In Division 1, top-seeded Sun Prairie defeated Racine Horlick 57-41, and the Cardinals will get #5 Madison East, winners over #4 Madison La Follette 57-52. On the bottom half of the bracket, #2 Middleton breezed past #10 Waunakee 60-38, while #3 Madison Memorial held off #11 Janesville Craig 54-51.

Division 2, Sectional 2 saw Beaver Dam, ranked #1 in the state and also ranked nationally, drain 18 threes in a 88-38 domination of Mliwaukee Vincent. Sectional 3 had an upset, as #5 DeForest upended #1 Monona Grove, the Badger South champion, 44-42. The Norskies will meet #2 Monroe, who defeated #6 Stoughton 67-53 (more below), in a sectional semi-final on Thursday. In the bottom half of the sectional, #3 Milton defeated #7 Jefferson 55-34, and will play #1-seed Waterford in the other sectional semifinal.

One of the regional finals postponed to Monday is #4 Wisconsin Dells at #1 Prairie du Chien. #3 Lodi had a potential game-winning layup at the buzzer miss, sending #2 Platteville along to the sectional semifinals with a 47-46 victory. On the bottom half of the sectional, defending D3 champ Marshall defeated Martin Luther 73-58, and will face the #1 seed Shoreland Lutheran on Thursday.

Monroe 67, Stoughton 53

A game that started out as a defensive slugfest evolved into a Monroe rout as the Cheesemakers solved the Vikings' 2-3 zone en route to a 14-point victory.

Monroe's three leading scorers, Sydney Hilliard and sisters Emily and Megan Benzschawel, combined for 56 points on the night, driving Monroe's lead to as many as 26 before subbing out late in the second half.

In the first half, Stoughton held the early lead until three minutes in. From there, Monroe hit several tough shots, none bigger to the first-half run to a 13-point halftime lead than the back-to-back corner threes by Grace Mathiason, who finished with eight points on the game. The two three-point baskets were part of a quick 8-0 run to put the game into double digits for the remainder of the evening.

Stoughton's slash-and-kick game was stymied by swarming defense and turnovers, never really getting into rhythm. Leading scorer Peighton Trieloff was limited to five points, while only one Viking, Alex Ashworth, reached double figures (10).

Still, the 2-3 zone was great prep for what Monroe will see in the sectional semifinal Thursday in McFarland, when the Cheesemakers will take on DeForest. The Norskies used a 2-3 zone to upset Badger South champion Monona Grove, 44-42.
