A slow-starting game in blustery, cold conditions in late May turned into a Monroe Cheesemakers rout as they smashed past the Turner Trojans 12-0 in five innings on Tuesday afternoon.

With temperatures in the high 40's and winds blowing out to straightaway left, gusting to 35 miles per hour, the weather was less than ideal for offense, at least early. After the first inning and a half went scoreless, Monroe's Grace Tostrud led off the bottom of the second with a laser-beam solo home run to left-center to break open the scoring. It was 1-0 Cheesemakers after two innings.

Monroe broke the game open in the bottom of the third by loading the bases for Sydney Updike, who cleared the bases with a triple to push Monroe's lead to 4-0. Tostrude brought her home with a single, and two batters later, with another Cheesemaker on base, Sloane Ambrose delivered a two-out triple to add two more runs to make it 7-0 Monroe. A sac-fly by Lizzie Snider got Ambrose across the plate, and after the third inning was complete, the Cheesemakers had scored seven runs in the frame and held an 8-0 lead.

Turner's closest scoring opportunity came in the top of the fourth inning, when Zari Martin singled, then advanced to third on a throwing error with two outs in the inning. However, she would be stranded, and that was the last of the Trojans' scoring opportunities in the game.

Monroe's bottom of the fourth brought eight hitters to the dish. Updike doubled in a run, and Olivia Bobak sent two more home on a triple. Tostrud hit a sac-fly as the next batter to bring home Bobak, and those four runs pushed the score to 12-0 Monroe.

Bobak closed out the fifth in order to finish the complete-game shutout, tossing five strikeouts while giving up only three hits and no walks in her first action in a week.

Monroe will travel to Jefferson in a #3 vs. #2 match-up seeding-wise. Monroe is ranked #3 in the state coaches' poll while Jefferson is ranked #8.
