Division 2, Sectional 3 Regional: Evansville (11-11) 2, Monroe (4-21) 0

On a perfect afternoon for baseball in southern Wisconsin, the Evansville Blue Devils kept the Monroe Cheesemakers off the board to advance in the WIAA State Baseball Tournament, winning the regional opener between the schools 2-0.

Evansville got on the board when Carson Hill singled in Ryan Borchardt in the bottom of the third to make the score 1-0. Then, in the sixth inning, Aaron Anderson led off the inning with a solo home run to left-center over the 350-foot sign.

Monroe had chances in the ballgame. The Cheesemakers sent Payton Stauffacher around third on a hit by Dagan Rach, but he was caught in a rundown between home plate and third base in what would have been a game-tying scoring situation in the top of the fourth.

In the top of the seventh, down to their final three outs with the 7-8-9 hitters coming up, pitcher Max Lange led off the inning with a single, and got to second base with one out and two on in the inning, but Evansville pitcher Tyr Severson induced a double-play ball to end the ball game.

Monroe's Lange went five and two-thirds innings pitched, with four strikeouts and three hits with two runs allowed. Evansville's Ethan France pitched five and a third innings with three hits allowed and seven strikeouts, and he and Severson combined on the shutout.

The Cheesemakers end the season 4-21, a three-win improvement over last year, and will graduate nine seniors.

Evansville moves on to the regional semifinal round next Tuesday to play McFarland or Stoughton.
