Baseball: Sun Prairie, McFarland, Mineral Point advance to state

All but two spots are now filled for the 2019 WIAA Baseball Championships June 11-13 at Fox Cities Stadium. Sun Prairie, McFarland, and Mineral Point all advance to state after winning sectional titles on Tuesday.

Sun Prairie is making its 15th appearance at state after defeating Madison West 7-0 and Verona 10-0 in six innings. The Cardinals allowed one run in three playoff games. Sun Prairie will face Oak Creek in a Division 1 quarterfinal on Tuesday morning.

In Division 2, McFarland got past Elkhorn 7-4 and then a nine-inning battle with Edgewood 3-2, as the Crusaders had just played a 10-inning game with Wisconsin Dells to advance to the sectional final. The Spartans are making their first trip to state, and will face Union Grove on Wednesday night.

Markesan of the Trailways Conference advanced to state from the area Division 3 sectional played at Brodhead, defeating Lakeside Lutheran 6-1 and Prairie du Chien, who lost their sectional final last year as well, 3-1. They'll get Ozaukee on Wednesday afternoon.

It's back-to-back trips to state for Mineral Point in Division 4 after making it in Division 3 last year, as the Pointers blasted Deerfield 6-1 and then played great defense in a 2-1 win over Living Word Lutheran to make it back to Grand Chute. They'll face the winner of the Riverdale sectional on Wednesday morning, as the Riverdale sectional was completely postponed due to rain and will be played Wednesday.

The only other game statewide that was postponed due to weather was Eau Claire North vs. Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln in Division 1, which will be played on Wednesday.
