Softball: Poynette, Horicon advance to state championship

Defending D4 champion Horicon and defending D3 champion Poynette were among the teams to advance to the state finals from action on Friday afternoon at Goodman Diamond in the WIAA State Softball Championships.

Horicon used a five-run top of the sixth inning to rally past Thorp in one of the Division 4 semifinals. Trailing 3-2, Horicon used small ball tactics to take the lead, recording two sacrifice hits in the frame to take the lead. The Marshladies will take on undefeated Mishicot in the Division 4 championship game on Friday morning at 10:30 a.m.

Box Score: Horicon 7, Thorp 3

Defense and a strong effort on the mound helped Poynette shut out Prescott in a Division 3 semifinal on Friday afternoon 7-0. Casey Fountain allowed just two hits, one a pop fly in the infield that fell harmlessly between three defenders, and struck out 14 in the victory for the undefeated Pumas. Poynette used a four-run fourth inning to take the lead and cruised to victory. Poynette will meet Campbellsport in a Division 3 championship game on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Box Score: Poynette 7, Prescott 0
