Oregon won the Division 2 title while Edgewood finished as runners-up in Division 3 in the 2019 WIAA State Girls Soccer Championships on Saturday at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.
Oregon (17-0-2) was crowned champion in Division 2 with a 4-1 advantage in a shootout following a 1-1 tie with Whitefish Bay.
The Blue Dukes controlled the tempo with its attack for most of the first half, but their nine shots produced no goals with their five shots on goal.
That changed early in the second half when they scored within the first four minutes of the period at 48:19. Moments after the Blue Dukes missed a golden opportunity to score, Belle Patzer directed a pass from Maggie Starker on the baseline to grab a 1-0 lead at 48:19.
Less than three minutes later, the Panthers tied the game at 1-1 on a free kick by Hannah Rohrer. She drilled a shot from 25 yards out that entered the top right area of the goal at 51:15.
Both teams attempted five shot in the second half, but Whitefish Bay dominated control in both overtime periods with a 10-0 shot advantage, but Panthers’ goalkeeper Melia Moyer stopped the four shot she faced on goal to send the game to a shootout.
Sydney McKee, Lauren Denu, Randey Lewis and Katie Eisele made the Panthers’ first four attempts of the shootout to clinch the championship. Moyer made 10 saves in the game for the Panthers, and Rohrer led the team on the attack with three shots, including two on goal.
Whitefish Bay outshot the Panthers 24-8, including an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal. Starker paced the Blue Dukes with four of her seven shots on goal in the second half after not playing in the first period.
The Panthers win their second State championship in their fifth tourney appearance, and Whitefish Bay (24-1-10 places runner-up in its membership-leading 20th State experience.
Catholic Memorial (25-4-1) won its seventh championship in the last eight year by defeating Edgewood 1-0 in the Division 3 championship game.
The only score of the game came at 34:25 into the first half. Emma Kober knocked in a header just below the crossbar. She rebounded a deflection of a goalkeeper save following a corner kick by Emma Westrick.
The game featured limited opportunities to score. Each team recorded only five shots. Only one of Edgewood’s shots were on goal, that attempt was one of two shots by Jordy Rothwell. Shannon McWilliams recorded the other two shots on goal for Catholic Memorial.
Catholic Memorial goalkeeper Marina Evert, who was credited with the win in goal, made one save, and Elle Meriggioli made a pair of saves for Edgewood.
The title is Catholic Memorial’s membership-leading 11th State championship. The Crusaders have now won Division 3 championships in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and this season. They have also won Division 2 titles in 2004, 2006 , 2007, 2010, 2012 and 2013.
Edgewood (18-3-2) finishes runner-up in its sixth State Tournament appearance.
