2018 HSFB Top Games #3: Waunakee 23, DeForest 20

DeForest drove into scoring position with just seconds left on the clock, but an interception in the end zone by Waunakee sent the Warriors on to Level 3 of the WIAA Playoffs in 2018 as we count down our top five high school football broadcasts from a season ago.

DeForest challenged reigning Division 2 champion Waunakee all night, but couldn't pull the upset, as their final play of the game, a pass to the end zone to take the lead, was intercepted with seven seconds to play.

The Norskies took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, and the upset alert was officially on. Waunakee countered with 16 unanswered points, including a 49-yard field goal by Arkansas baseball recruit Nate Stevens, who led Waunakee to a state title in baseball last summer. Waunakee led 16-14 at halftime.

DeForest wasn't done, however, as they got a second passing touchdown to Lane Larson from Trey Schroeder to take the lead again in the second half. Waunakee had the answer for it, however, an 80-yard touchdown pass from Jarrett Wulf to Sawyer Maly.

On the last drive of the game, DeForest got it to the Waunakee 31, but the pass was picked off on fourth down in the end zone by Joe Hauser, and Waunakee hung on for a wild 23-20 win.
