The high school football season has concluded its third week already in Wisconsin.
Conference play began in the Badger North and South, while the Big 8 and Rock Valley have already played a third of their league games and the Capitol works through challenging non-conference contests.
In the Big 8, two teams remain undefeated at the top of the heap. Verona had little trouble dispatching Janesville Craig 49-8 on Friday night, while Madison Memorial cruised to a 42-7 win over cross-town rival Madison East. Those two programs are on a collision course in Week 6, a game you will hear on The Big 1070.
This week, Memorial will test its mettle against Middleton, as the Cardinals bounced back from a Week 2 defeat at the hands of Verona by holding off Madison West 23-12. Middleton at Madison Memorial is The Big 1070's Game of the Week presented by the Shoe Box.
Middleton is tied for third in the Big 8 with Madison La Follette, who shut out Beloit Memorial 33-0, and Sun Prairie, 52-10 winners over Janesville Parker.
In addition to Middleton at Memorial, the Big 8 will have Janesville Craig at Sun Prairie, La Follette at Janesville Parker, and Beloit Memorial at Madison East. Of that group, East and Parker are looking for their first wins of the season. Also, Madison West plays at Verona, as the Regents are in the midst of the gauntlet portion of their schedule, while Verona looks to continue to add to its run of high-scoring victories.
Our Game of the Week in Week 3 took us to the Badger South:
Stoughton was fairly dominant in this contest, although Oregon made it interesting late. The Vikings had a perfectly balanced offense in the first half and cruised in the second, allowing a kick return for a score and a desperation drive inside of two minutes to trim their lead a bit. Stoughton won the Battle For 138, 42-34.
Elsewhere in the opening week of Badger South play, Watertown shut out Edgewood 41-0, Milton dominated Fort Atkinson 41-7, and Monona Grove rallied with two scores in the final 3:11 to win over Monroe 39-29 to avoid starting 0-3.
This week, Milton gets a chance to show they have arrived in a big way when they take on two-time reigning conference champion Monona Grove at John Klement Athletic Complex, while Edgewood and Oregon renew their rivalry just off of Highway 14. Watertown makes the long trip to Monroe, and Fort Atkinson will play at Stoughton.
The Badger North got play underway as well, and perhaps the featured game saw the presumptive top Badger North contender to Waunakee, DeForest, blank Reedsburg 28-0 on Friday night. Waunakee, meanwhile, demolished Beaver Dam 64-20, while Mount Horeb/Barneveld rallied past Portage 24-21. Sauk Prairie started 3-0 and took down Baraboo 16-3 on Friday as well.
This week, Mount Horeb/Barneveld travels to Waunakee, while DeForest hosts Portage. Baraboo is at Beaver Dam, and perhaps the contest to watch will be Sauk Prairie at Reedsburg.
In the Rock Valley, Evansville continued its ascension after an 0-9 season, defeating Jefferson 40-8. East Troy stayed undefeated with a 21-14 win over Big Foot. McFarland got a big win over Turner 20-17, while Edgerton bounced back with a 49-15 blowout of Brodhead/Juda. This week's top games include Evansville at Turner and McFarland at East Troy.
It's still non-conference time in the Capitol Conferences. Three crossover games occurred, with Columbus blowing out New Glarus/Monticello 46-17, Lodi shutting out Marshall 40-0, and Belleville getting a 20-0 win over Poynette. Lake Country Lutheran edged Lakeside Lutheran 28-17, while Lake Mills got a tough 24-23 win over Onalaska.
This week, there are three more Capitol Crossovers, with Lakeside Lutheran at Marshall, Lodi at New Glarus/Monticello, and Cambridge at Luther Prep. Also, perennial power and top state contender Stratford visits Columbus, and defending D7 state champ Black Hawk/Warren visits Waterloo.
Some of the other small school results include Lancaster winning over Darlington and Black Hawk/Warren getting past Potosi/Cassville:
