After winning the Big 8 for the first time in school history last year in boy's soccer, Verona's 2019 title defense is off to a good start, earning a #2 ranking in the WSCA Coaches Poll and a 3-0-1 start to the season.
Reigning conference coach of the year Chris Handrick talked about the start to the season with The Big 1070, crediting team play and a solid core of seniors who have been playing together since they were in elementary school.
Handrick also said that the addition of Forward Madison FC to the greater Madison area has injected some enthusiasm into the sport, and that his team took in a match earlier this year.
Verona's path to a conference title will be tough, as now five different Big 8 teams have been ranked in Division 1 in the first two polls. Handrick said that the Big 8 should again be the premiere Division 1 league in 2019.
