HSBB: Mount Horeb outlasts Monona Grove 52-50 in overtime

Torin Hannah's layup with 5.1 seconds remaining in overtime lifted Mount Horeb to a 52-50 overtime win at Monona Grove on Tuesday night, the first win of the season for the Vikings.

Mount Horeb (1-1) led by 11 points in the first half, leading 20-9 before settling for a 20-13 halftime advantage. Both teams struggled with turnovers in the first half, as well as poor shooting, as the defending champions of their respective conferences worked in all-new starting lineups after graduating over 90% of their scoring totals from a season ago.

In the second half, Monona Grove (0-1) made their push, taking their first lead of the game with 9:34 left in the second half. After trading leads for a few minutes, the Silver Eagles pulled out to a nine-point advantage, 44-35. Mount Horeb clawed their way back and took a 50-48 lead into the final minute.

Lance Nelson drove down the lane and made a left-handed layup to tie the score at 50, and Owen Ziegler's three from the left wing fell short as the would-be game-winner clanked off the front of the rim, sending the game to overtime.

After a series of long possessions, it was Hannah's layup and-one on the foul that was the difference, as Mount Horeb rebounded from a season-opening loss to Turner with a non-conference win over another team in their sectional.

Mount Horeb will take on Onalaska on Saturday, while Monona Grove opens up Badger South play against one of this year's favorites, Monroe, on Saturday.

Owen Ziegler had a game-high 17 points for Mount Horeb, while Hannah finished with 11. Anthony Lange added nine points and Carter Gilkes scored seven.

Monona Grove's leading scorer was Lance Nelson. Connor Bracken added 10 points, clutch defense, and three blocked shots, as the 6'5" post made life difficult for the Vikings.
