Edgewood remains undefeated in the Badger South.
All six goals in Edgewood's 4-2 win over Monroe were scored in the third period, with the Crusaders going up 3-0 and holding on for a 4-2 win on Tuesday night in Monroe at the State Line Ice Community Expo.
Andrew Budzinski got the scoring going when he launched in a shot from just behind the right circle, which rang a post on its way in for the first goal of the game just 91 seconds into the third period.
Near the midway point of the third period, the Crusaders got two quick goals. First, Will Hartman blasted from near the blue line left-center unassisted for a goal with 8:50 remaining. Then, only 28 seconds later, Drew Lenz took a nifty drop pass from Payton Smith to put Edgewood up 3-0.
Monroe coach Barry Einbeck used the team timeout to 'calm his players down,' he said after the game. From there, Monroe was able to rally with a goal of their own, a Hayden Roth rebound off of Cade Janecke's efforts to dig away the puck in front of the net. That power play goal made it 3-1 Edgewood with just 2:58 left in the game.
It took only 44 seconds for Edgewood to answer with what was likely the clincher, as Payton Smith made it 4-1 Edgewood with only 2:14 left in the contest.
Cade Janecke got a long pass from center ice to knock the lead back down to two goals, with 1:38 remaining, but it would prove to be too little, too late as Edgewood kept its conference record unblemished, improving to 8-0 in the Badger South and 14-4 on the season.
Monroe dropped to 13-4 overall and 4-3 in the Badger South.
The teams will meet again on Monday at LaBahn Arena in Madison, Wis.
