For the first time this season, a Big 8 team sits atop the Division 1 Coaches Poll at WisSports.net.
La Follette, one of only two remaining undefeated teams in Division 1, takes over the top spot from Sussex Hamilton, which lost to Brookfield Central, the reigning D1 champ, last week. La Follette got a huge win over Central in the Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Shootout back in December, so it stands to reason that the Lancers are atop this week's poll.
After La Follette, Central, and Hamilton, Sun Prairie stays at #4, their lone loss coming to La Follette only two weeks ago.
In Division 2 for boys hoops, Stoughton (#5), DeForest (#6), and Reedsburg (#9) are all in the top ten. DeForest and Stoughton will meet in the second-place game of the Badger Challenge on Saturday at Edgewood.
Division 3 features a handful of teams from the greater metro area. East Troy (10-1) is #2 and leading the Rock Valley Conference, with Wisconsin Dells (11-1) at #6 and Lake Mills (11-1) at #10. D4 has several southwestern Wisconsin teams in the top ten, with top-ranked Cuba City (11-0) leading the way ahead of #5 Darlington and #8 Fennimore. Undefeated Monticello is #4 in Division 5, with only Wauzeka-Steuben at #9 ranked from the southwestern part of the state.
Girls basketball has a close pick at the top, with defending D1 champion Bay Port holding a narrow advantage over undefeated Madison Memorial in the Division 1 Coaches Poll at WisSports.net.
Memorial will rematch with #4 Middleton on January 31, a game that will be broadcast by The Big 1070.
Beaver Dam leads the way in Division 2, although the Beavers will be without longtime coach Tim Chase for an extended period of time as he undergoes treatment for cancer. DeForest, also of the Badger North, checks in at #3.
Platteville is undefeated and stays atop the Division 3 polling this week, with Lake Mills at #5, Marshall at #7, and Prairie du Chien at #8. Only one area team is in the D4 poll, Cuba City, at #7. In Division 5, two-time defending champ Black Hawk is the clear #1, but River Ridge (#3), also undefeated, isn't too far behind, with Fall River (#4) and Shullsburg (#7) also ranked again this week.
