Most of the Madison area's regional finals were played Thursday night across the area in the WIAA Tournaments in both girls and boys hockey. Here are the results.
In girls hockey, the Stoughton Icebergs scored an upset win as the #6 seed, defeating Onalaska 2-1 to advance to take on the #2 Cap City Cougars, who blew out the #7 Badger Lightning 9-0 on the other side of the bracket. That game will take place Tuesday night in Sun Prairie.
The Metro Lynx and Rock County Fury enjoyed byes as #1 seeds and will host sectional semifinal games on Tuesday night.
In boys hockey, Division 1, Sectional 2, there was one notable upset as #7 Beaver Dam defeated #2 Fond du Lac 6-3, while the rest of the bracket went chalk. Beaver Dam meets #3 Neenah, last year's state runner-up, on Tuesday night.
Sectional 3, with most of the Madison-area teams in it, #1 Verona and #8 Madison Memorial play Friday night. The winner there will take on #4 Sauk Prairie, 5-1 winners over #5 Madison West.
In the bottom half of the bracket, #3 Sun Prairie defeated #11 Tomah/Sparta, who were advanced instead of #6 Middleton due to a forfeit, and will play at #2 Edgewood (LaBahn Arena) Tuesday night.
In Division 2, Sectional 4, #3 Waunakee routed #6 Cedarburg 9-2 and will see #2 Waupun on the road next Tuesday, as Waupun defeated #7 Stoughton 10-0. #1 St. Mary's Springs awaits #5 Oregon after the Panthers defeated #4 McFarland 6-3.
