HSGB: Regional semifinals feature few upsets in area play

The second night of the WIAA Girls Basketball Tournament went mostly chalk, with only a couple of notable upsets around south-central and southwester Wisconsin on Friday night.

In Division 1, La Follette scored a 10-7 upset over Racine Case with a 79-63 win. It was one of just two victories by road teams in Division 1 on Friday night.

Division 2 had a number of upsets, but mostly of the #5-over-#4 variety. Locally, #7 Jefferson took down #2 Elkhorn 53-42 in the biggest upset in the D-2 field, while last year's state champion Beaver Dam had no trouble advancing in their match-up. Last year's state runner-up, Monroe, a #5 seed, fell to #4 Monona Grove 77--74.

Only two #5-over-#4 upsets occurred in the entire Division 3 field, one of those Edgewood defeating Dodgeville 51-47, setting up a mostly as-expected regional final round as the home teams mostly advanced.

Three of the eight #5 seeds won in Division 4, and the bracket featured another #7 over #2 upset in Division 4 as Cedar Grove-Belgium knocked off Ozaukee 52-39. Defending champion Aquinas dominated Darlington 94-44.

Sectional 4 in Division 5 saw three upsets, led by N.E.W Lutheran over Hustisford 48-40 in a #7-over-#2. Perhaps one of the more surprising results of the night locally was #6 Albany taking down #3 Shullsburg 51-48 in overtime, but the Sectional is still stacked with two teams from state last year in the #1 and #2 spots (Black Hawk and Fall River, each notching double-digit wins to move along).
