HSH: Lynx finish season as runner-up in first state appearance

In the first-ever trip to state for the Madison Metro Lynx girls hockey program, the Lynx finished the 2019-2020 campaign as the runner-up, falling 5-3 to defending champion Fox Cities in the state championship Saturday at the Alliant Energy Center Coliseum.

Fox Cities got off to a 2-0 lead in the first period with a pair of even-strength goals from Maddy Jablonski and Gwen Gillard. In the second period, the Lynx answered back just 34 seconds into the frame, as Sydney Reaths cut the deficit to one goal.

Only a few minutes later, Fox Cities scored on the power play to go up 3-1, and got another power-play goal mid-way through the period to go up 4-1.

The Lynx weren't done yet, however. Claire Wischhoff netted a goal with under five minutes remaining in the second period, and the Lynx got another goal only two minutes into the third period by Mia Goetzke to bring the game within one goal.

Fox Cities would get some insurance mid-way through the third, as Annika Horman got her second goal of the game with under eight minutes to play to put the Stars up 5-3, which ended up being the final margin.

Addie Armstrong, on in relief of Camryn McKersie, stopped 30 shots in two periods, but the Stars only had to make 15 saves on 18 shots as the defending champions took the win.

In their first-ever game at state on Thursday, the Lynx advanced past the Rock County Fury 5-2.
