Less than 10 hours before the defending Division 5 champion Black Hawk girls basketball team was set to take the floor at the Resch Center in Green Bay, the WIAA Tournaments were canceled.
Coach Mike Flanagan got the early word from one of the WIAA's Board of Control members, Willy Chambers of Black Hawk High School in South Wayne, Wisconsin.
"He told us about quarter to eleven that the tournament was being canceled," said Flanagan.
The WIAA announcement came after the top of the hour, just 10 hours before Black Hawk's scheduled 9:05 a.m. tip time in a Division 5 state semifinal.
While the ending is less than ideal for the team, especially its seniors, Flanagan said that most of the team was able to experience the thrills of a state championship the year before.
"Maybe it's different if we didn't make that run last year," admitted Flanagan.
Black Hawk's game was the next game up, and the Warriors' season ending as the team on deck made for some interesting conversation with Coach Flanagan, who you can hear from below:
