On Tuesday, the Big 8 Conference was the first (and, a day later, still the only) conference in Wisconsin to cancel its fall sports athletic events. While the move was somewhat expected, it did segue into the WIAA Board of Control announcing they were holding a special business session on Thursday morning to discuss fall sports and to consider a proposal to move fall sports to the spring.
Brian Posick spoke with MMSD Athletic Director Jeremy Schlitz about the Big 8's unanimous decision to cancel fall conference sports competitions amidst the coronavirus pandemic, and some of the feedback he's received since the decision was made.
Schlitz says that the decision does allow for there to be fall sports if the season were to move to the spring, and school and county health guidance and restrictions allowed it. In the Big 8's original statement announcing the decision, the conference was canceling fall sports conference events based on six of the 10 schools being unable to field teams due to virtual schooling, and one additional school being in Dane County, where athletic competitions are currently prohibited.
More counties, school districts, and the state at large await the guidance from the WIAA after Thursday morning's special session.
