The old record for home runs in an entire season of baseball was 5,693. The new record will be well past that. Last night Alex Gordon hit the 5,694th homer of the MLB season even though he's having one of the worst years of his career.
While the home run itself came in a losing effort, the more interesting debate is why the record is going to be beat by about 400 dingers this year, and why there are nearly 2,000 more homers this year than just three years ago.
